Oh, Thing of Beauty
- On the first day of his retirement, Mort tried having his cake and eating it too.
Excerpt: Between the two of them, the Auerbachs had no ovaries or appendixes, one gallbladder and a lot of fading short-term memory. And while Ruth Auerbach had lost most of her near vision, her husband, Mort, had never had much far. With this many absences on their attendance sheet, it was no wonder they failed to notice, on a Monday morning in April, the art class that had set up easels and palettes and three-legged camp stools all around their backyard. . . .
