9/11 photo report
After Dark
- New York’s financial district was still shrouded in dust on the nights of September 12th and 13th, when photographer Zana Briski took these pictures.
Excerpt: William Street near Liberty Street: “I saw this bird covered in ashes, her beak caked in dirt, unable to fly,” recalls Briski. “I picked her up and washed her off and carried her around all night in my camera pouch while I shot. Then I took her home and cared for her, and she seemed better. But she died in my hands the next morning.” . . .
About the photographer: London-born Zana Briski has produced photo stories in Baltimore, Haiti, Morocco and India as well as New York City, where she now lives. She has been documenting Calcutta’s red-light district intermittently since 1995. In conjunction with the Calcutta project she has organized a series of photography classes for children of the city’s prostitutes; photos taken by these kids will be featured in Amnesty International’s 2003 calendar. The photos on the first four pages of this story were all taken on September 13th, 2001; the one on the story’s final page was taken on September 12th.
